Elementary Curriculum Coordinator (Anticipated vacancy 2021-2022)

Summary

The Elementary Curriculum Coordinator manages and coordinates the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development in the Preschool, Alcott Elementary, Thoreau Elementary, and Willard Elementary.   This includes all curriculum areas: English Language Arts; Mathematics; Social Studies, Science, Health; Social Emotional; Art; Music; Library; Physical Education; and Spanish. This position provides the system oversight, consistency, and vision for a majority of the activities related to teaching and learning processes, and facilitates implementation of the District’s mission and goals.  Additionally, the incumbent collaborates with each of the other departments/divisions of the District, as appropriate, on matters related to teaching and learning, professional development, and program development; this includes elementary school educators; elementary administrators; school-based curriculum coordinators;  special educators and special education administrators; all district-level employees; etc. Develops systematic approaches to improving student achievement based on testing and observation; also works with outside agencies to meet all students’ needs. Assists in implementing federal and state mandates such as No Child Left Behind, MCAS, Ed Reform, and others. Reports to and works closely with the Director of Teaching and Learning.

(Note - this position replaces and assumes duties of the current Elementary Science Coordinator)

Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Coordinates all implementation of all preschool and elementary curriculum, including vetting, selection, adoption, and evaluation of all materials in English Language Arts; Mathematics; Social Studies, Science, Health; Social Emotional; Art; Music; Library; Physical Education; and Spanish.
2. Coordinates ordering and distribution of materials and supplies in all curriculum areas.
3. Keeps curriculum management database (Rubicon Atlas) current and relevant.
4. Implements training on all curriculum for teachers, tutors, and administrators. 
5. Supports all preschool and elementary faculty in their implementation of the adopted curriculum.
6. Meets with all newly hired faculty to orient and train them on the curriculum.
7. Teaches in the Innovation Lab.
8. Coordinates and communicates with all elementary school educators; elementary administrators. school-based curriculum coordinators;  special educators and special education administrators; all district-level employees; etc.
9. Works with the Director of Teaching and Learning to run the Elementary Steering Committee and the Elementary Principals’ meetings.
10. Coordinates the elementary progress reports.  
11. Integrates special and regular education in and implements inclusionary practices. 
12. Ensures quality programming while acknowledging the need for efficient and cost-effective systems.
13. Stays current with regulations and laws of the implementation of elementary education so that he/she may properly represent the system effectively in matters of compliance.
14. Ensures the implementation of federal and state mandates.
15. Sets standards of excellence and provides leadership in program development across the elementary schools.
16. Listens and solves problems for staff, parents, and children.
17. Supports the principals to develop effective teams. 
18. Collaborates with the School’s Business, Finance, and Operations Department to keep a firm account of monthly expenses, including salaries, tuitions, and transportation.  Also works with Business, Finance, and Planning to establish a fiscally responsible budget each year.
19. Works in partnership with the Director of Teaching and Learning on an integrated professional development plan for faculty and staff.
20. Writes a variety of reports.
21. Attends conferences, seminars, and other professional meetings for on-going and updated professional development.
22. Reads journals, bulletins, and other periodicals related to elementary education.
23. Active as a member in a professional organization in which membership is held.
24. Performs similar or related work as required.
